Does ChatGPT Recommend Your Restaurant? Here's How to Check

Don’t search your own restaurant name. Test diner questions for cuisine, dish, occasion, and neighborhood — then see who ChatGPT names instead of you.

TL;DR

  • Never test with your restaurant’s name — ask diner questions instead.
  • Run cuisine, dish, occasion, neighborhood, and late-night searches.
  • Record who appears instead; those are your AI discovery competitors.

Here's a simple test every restaurant owner should try.

Open ChatGPT and ask:

“What are the best [your cuisine] restaurants in [your city]?”

Don't include your restaurant's name.

Look at the recommendations.

Are you there?

Now change the question.

“Where should I go for date night in [your city]?”

Then:

“Where can I get the best [your signature dish] in [your city]?”

Then:

“What restaurant should I try for a birthday dinner in [your city]?”

You might discover something interesting.

Your restaurant may appear for some searches and disappear completely for others. That's AI search visibility in practice: not a yes/no rank, a pattern across questions.

Why Doesn't ChatGPT Recommend Every Restaurant?

Restaurant recommendations can depend on the question, available information and the systems used to answer it.

That means having a website alone doesn't guarantee recommendation.

Your restaurant's broader online presence matters.

AI needs enough context to understand things such as:

What type of restaurant is this?

Where is it?

What dishes does it serve?

What is it known for?

What dining occasions is it appropriate for?

What do customers say about it?

If those signals are unclear, your restaurant can be harder to surface for relevant questions. Fixing that is restaurant AI SEO.

Don't Only Search Your Restaurant's Name

This is one of the biggest mistakes when testing AI visibility.

Asking:

“Tell me about Tony's Caribbean Kitchen.”

doesn't measure discovery very well.

You've already told ChatGPT which restaurant you're interested in.

Instead ask a question from the perspective of someone who hasn't chosen a restaurant yet.

For example:

“Best Caribbean food near me.”

That's where the competition happens.

Test Different Types of Searches

Create a simple list.

Cuisine

Best Jamaican restaurant in [city]

Dish

Best oxtail in [city]

Occasion

Best restaurant for date night in [city]

Experience

Best restaurant with cocktails in [city]

Local

Best restaurant near [neighborhood]

Need

Best restaurant open late in [city]

Now you'll have a much more realistic picture of your restaurant's AI visibility.

Record Who Gets Recommended Instead

This part is extremely important.

If you don't appear, write down who does.

After 20–50 searches you'll start seeing patterns.

Maybe the same three restaurants repeatedly appear.

Those aren't merely your offline competitors anymore.

They're your AI discovery competitors.

Then Ask Why

Compare their public presence with yours.

Does the competitor have:

A better structured menu?

Clearer cuisine descriptions?

More information about signature dishes?

More consistent listings?

More detailed restaurant content?

Stronger review coverage?

Better information about dining experiences?

Those differences give you somewhere to start. For a ChatGPT-specific checklist, see how to get your restaurant recommended by ChatGPT.

Trova Does This Automatically

Manually repeating dozens of searches can become tedious.

That's why we built Trova.

Trova is AI visibility software that helps restaurants understand their visibility across AI and restaurant discovery surfaces.

Instead of checking one question, you can get a broader picture of:

Your AI Visibility Score

Searches you win

Searches you miss

Competitors being recommended

Visibility gaps

Recommended improvements

And over time, you can see whether those changes actually improve your restaurant's visibility.

Find Out If AI Recommends Your Restaurant

The question is no longer only:

“Can customers find us on Google?”

It's also:

“When customers ask AI where to eat, are we one of the answers?”
